(Location: Sidney Street runs north, for about a third of a mile, from Commercial Road (A13) to the junction of Cambridge Heath Road (A107) with Whitechapel Road and Mile End Road (A11). It is parallel to Jubilee Street, to the east, and Cavell Street, to the west.)

Sidney Street was the scene of the famous "Siege of Sidney Street", also known as the "Battle of Stepney", of 3 January 1911. Preceded by the "Houndsditch Murders" of three policeman, the siege ended with the deaths of two members of the gang of burglars and international anarchists supposedly led by Peter Piatkow, a.k.a. "Peter the Painter".

Previously, Sidney Street was in the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney (established 1900) in the County of London (established 1889), both of which entities were abolished in 1965.

Sidney Street had been part of the civil parish of Mile End Old Town, which was abolished in 1927, to be absorbed into Stepney Borough parish, which was abolished in 1965.
