Congregation Data

"Jerusalem" Chevra

Union Street, London E1.

(Location: Union Street (now renamed Adler Street after the former Chief Rabbi, Hermann Adler (1839-1911)), in London's East End, runs south, some 700 feet from Whitechapel High Road to Commercial Road, about 1,000 feet east of Gardiners Corner.)

Date Founded:

By 1887 (source)

Current Status:

Closed, presumably by 1896, as the Congregation is not listed in the first Jewish Year Book 1896-1897.

Orthodox - Ashkenazi

One of the 21 or 22 original members of the Federation of Synagogues formed on 6 November 1887 (listed by V. D. Lipman in his "Social History of the Jews in England 1850-1950" - pp 120-121), although it does not appear to have been one of the congregations that attended the meeting of 16 October 1887 at which it was agreed to form the Federation.

Local Government Districts:

The locality is now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, created on 1 April 1965, within the administrative area of Greater London.

Previously, Adler Street, formerly Union Street, was in the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney (established 1900) within the County of London (established 1889), both of which entities were abolished in 1965.

The southern 500 feet of Union (Adler) Street was in the civil parish of Mile End Old Town, the northern 200 feet being in the civil parish of Whitechapel. Both civil parishes were in the former County of Middlesex until 1889 and were abolished in 1927 by absorption into Stepney Borough parish (until that parish's abolition in 1965).

Registration Districts:

From 1 July 1837 - Mile End Old Town or Whitechapel
From 1 January 1926 - Stepney
Since 1 January 1983 - Tower Hamlets (which would now hold the registers, if any)
