	The Catterick Garrison

The Catterick Garrison, the largest British Army garrison in the world, with a population of over 13,000,
was constructed in 1914, although a Territorial Army camp had existed on the site since 1907.
It was originally named Richmond Camp
but changed in 1915 to Catterick Camp, and in 1973 it was modified to Catterick Garrison.
It is situated approximately 15 miles south of Darlington.

Catterick was part of the Rural District of Richmond within the
North Riding of Yorkshire until 1974, when the district was merged
with a number of neighbouring authorities to form the Richmondshire district of the
			new county of North Yorkshire.
In 2023, Richmondshire District Council was abolished and North Yorkshire became a unitary authority
(excluding certain urban areas which were themselves unitary
			authorities).

much of the work being carried out by
German prisoners of war.(i)  This was consecrated on Sunday, 5 August 1945
by Rabbi I. Brodie, SCF, then the Senior Jewish Chaplain
(later Chief Rabbi Dr. Israel Brodie).
The service was conducted by the Area Chaplain, Rev. M. Wagner, CF,
assisted by Rev. Arthur Saul Super, CF and
		Rev. Dr. Barnett Joseph, CF.(i)
