Table 2, Author's Note: The word bóżnica (bożnica) [prayer house—trans.] is used in the Polish language to designate a place dedicated to God. The word “synagogue” derives from the Greek and designates a “place of gathering.” It is a house of prayer and religious services, as well as a place for studying the Torah and Talmud, a meeting hall, and the headquarters of the executive board of the community council and the rabbinical court. [To do justice to the variety of such places in the Jewish community, one would have to differentiate three kinds: (1) Synagogue — the principal large meeting place that served as a large prayer hall as well as meeting place and center of sacred study; (2) Besmedresh (beit midrash)—house of study—primarily a house of study but secondarily a place for daily prayer for those who chose to pray there, and also social meeting hall; (3) Shtibl (literally: a small room)—a room in a private dwelling or separate building used as a small prayer house for a small, specialized group of people, such as members of a common craft or friendship group or followers of a particular Hasidic sect.—ed.]
