The “East Bronx Czenstochower Society” in New York

by S. Goldberg

Translated by Gloria Berkenstat Freund

The “East Bronx Czenstochower Society” has been in existence for over 25 years. To be exact: We were members of the Czenstochower Organization in the earlier Arbeter Ring (Workman's Circle) branch. After the rift from the Arbeter Ring branch, those who split founded their own organization under the Jewish People's Fraternal Order. When the “Order” was dissolved, the Bronx Czenstochower landsleit (townspeople) reorganized under the name: “East Bronx Czenstochower Society.”

It would take too much space to list the various collections of money and actions that our Society carried out during its existence for the good of our brothers and sisters in our birthplace. Therefore, I will remember only one of them.

When Poland gained independence during the years of the First World War, and the condition of the Jews there was bitter, we, the East Bronx Czenstochower Society, immediately extended our brotherly hand to support our landsleit. The yearly balls, the clothing campaigns, the raffles, the “children's home” and other actions, found a wide acceptance in the hearts of our landsmanschaft [organization of people from the same town], through the Bronx Czenstochower Society.

Up to the present day, our Society is identified with every substantial action for the good of our landsleit beyond the sea.
