JewishGen maintains an indexed archive of personal messages which were posted on the soc.genealogy.jewish newsgroup (a.k.a. discussion group) commencing in September 1993. The archive may be accessed via a search engine which is on the Discussion Group Archives page. The page includes a helpful (and recommended!) list of search syntax instructions and examples about how to formulate a search enquiry.
 
The search engine is very easy to operate. Type in the name which you are researching, eg. a personal name or the name of a town. Then click on the [START SEARCH button] on the browser screen. If anything is found then a list of matches will be displayed. A search might take between ten seconds and a minute depending upon how many items are found.
 
Clicking on an item in the list will display the full text of the message. For added legibility, the word(s) being searched for are shown in red where possible. After reading a message, click on the [BACK button] on your browser screen to return to the list. Click again on the [BACK button] to return to the search engine. Click again on the [BACK button] to return to the JewishGen home page.

5. Find the search engine word entry box

Newsgroups may be accessed via your e-mail program or via a newsreader program. You will first need to ensure that your Internet provider offers the service. There are many thousands of newsgroups covering a vast range of subjects. Subscription is free and involves no more than clicking on a button.
