(Note:The was a later congregation known as the Lovers of Peace Synagogue, which adopted the name in the 1930s.)

Tewkesbury Buildings, Whitechapel, London E1.

(Location: Whitechapel is area in London's East End, in the vicinity of Whitechapel Road and Whitechapel High Street.

Date Founded:

1863 (according to Jewish Directory of 1874 by Asher I. Myers)

Current Status:

Closed. The Congregation is listed in the Jewish Directory of 1874 (by Asher I. Myers), but is not mentioned in the first Jewish Year Book, (1896/7). Accordingly, it is presumed to have closed between such dates; or to have merged with, or moved and formed the basis of, another congregation, adopting another name.

Ritual:

Presumably Ashkenazi Orthodoxi

Local Government Districts:

Whitechapel is now in the London Borough of Tower Hamlets, created on 1 April 1965, within the administrative area of Greater London.

Previously, Whitechapel was in the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney (established 1900) in the County of London (established 1889), both of which entities were abolished in 1965. Whitechapel was also a civil parish, which was abolished in 1927, being absorbed into Stepney Borough parish, which itself was abolished in 1965.
