Welcome to the NEW Ukraine-SIG website!

It's here - the brand-new, completely redone Ukraine-SIG website! The pages and images load much faster than before, and the pages all have a similar look and easy-to-use navigation. You'll find all the pages you remember, and more. We hope you'll discover fascinating, informative pages that have always been here, but previously hidden.

If you notice that a page for your town doesn't exist, or is missing its history or other information, that's because it hasn't been written. Feel free to contribute!

Give us a few days to fix any broken links that may have happened during the changeover. If after a while you still find a bad link, please let Hilary Henkin know. Please copy the exact URL from the browser address bar, so she can find the right page.

If you can't find something you remember from the old site, do let Hilary know. She'll let you know where it is, and could make it easier to find.

And of course, if you're now inspired to write a short paragraph for your shtetl's home page here, contribute a ShtetLink page, or share records or data, let us know!

New Records Available - New Research Projects!

Recently we have learned of new records that are available for many cities in the Ukraine, and of the previous existence of records we weren't aware of. No matter which cities or shtetls in the Ukraine you're interested in, you should definitely visit our brand-new Projects page!

There's a wide variety of data "out there", and we can all work together to get it accessible.

We can use people who speak only English, and those who know other languages.

We can use people who have more time than money to contribute, and those who have the extra funds to help.

We can use people who can visit depositories in their towns, and people who can let their keyboards do the searching.

In other words, we can use whatever skills you -- yes, you -- may have.

So check out the page, see which ideas interest you, then let your gubernia coordinator know.

Welcome to Ukraine-SIG!

We share histories, resources, data, and research tips to help each other research Jewish Genealogy in the region of the former Russian Empire gubernias now in Ukraine.

There's a LOT of information here; we hope you'll enjoy browsing and digging. If you have questions, or want to contribute something of your own, contact us.

New Contributions and Discoveries

Descendants of Trochenbrod, Ukraine,
meet in Washingon, D.C.

Trochenbrod may be familiar to many of you as the town in the story, "Everything is Illuminated" by Jonathan Safran Foer. It was a wholly Jewish town that once existed in Volynia gubernia, in northwestern Ukraine.

In April 2008, three generations of descendants of Trochenbrod Jews came together in Washington, D.C. to honor the memory of their ancestors and the unique community they had created.

Rose Blitzstein Elbaum has written about the gathering, and about the town, for us to share.  You can read about it here.
