On Friday, 15th of Tevet, 5747 (January 16, 1987), David Muller zl passed away and on Sunday, January 18, his family, hundreds of friends, comrades, and acquaintances accompanied him on his final journey to eternal rest in the cemetery on the green slope of Mount Carmel in Haifa.
David's death was a heavy loss to the natives of Ostroh and to me personally, having lost one of my dear friends, a friend of my youth and very dear intimate. I feel a special soulful need to lift up the character of David and to fulfill an obligation of honor to my dear friend who is no more.
We followed a long path in the field of Zionist activism together since the days of our youth in Ostroh. Our closest connection began on one of the Sabbaths in January 1930 at the home of Herzl (Grisha) Oderman zl - the son of one of the leaders of the General Zionist Party in our city of Ostroh of the Maharsha, the same party at whose head stood the celebrated leader of Polish Jewry between the two world wars - our teacher and rabbi, Yitzhak Grinboim zl.
During Hanukkah 5690 [=1930], Grisha Oderman was invited to attend the conference in Warsaw of the national council of the youth movement of the general Zionists, Ha-Shomer Ha-Leumi - a movement that later came to be called Ha-No'ar Ha-Tziyoni. Upon his return from Warsaw, Grisha invited a few friends to his house - students of the Polish secondary school and the government teachers' seminary in Ostroh and he proposed to us that we form a core group of the Ha-Shomer Ha-Leumi movement. After he explained to us the purpose and modes of action of the movement, we were convinced and we accepted his proposal and immediately, with the great energy and enthusiasm of youth, we approached enlisting friends to the ranks of the core group and to organizing groups and regiments, principally among the students and despite the severe prohibition against students of government educational institutions joining any youth movement of any kind.
The contribution of David Muller to the enlistment of friends into the movement and the creation of the core group was especially great. He was the life spirit and one of the leaders of the core group, who stood out for the talent of his leadership as one of the talented guides of our movement in Ostroh.
After Grisha Oderman - head of the core group graduated from the Polish secondary school and went to study medicine in Italy, David Muller was chosen as the head of the core group in his stead because he was head of the camp of pupils and also due to the strength of his leadership and commitment to our movement. He was the activist and the energy in the organization of hikes in nature and summer camps, for he was one of us who took care to train the youth in our core group in guard duty and scouting, too, and that was in addition to Jewish-Zionist education.
David's part in the education of the members of the core group was great. He advocated for the Zionist idea among the youth in our city because he believed that there was no other place in the world that could serve as a refuge and haven for the Jewish people other than the land of Israel. In meetings of the core group, he expressed his strong love for the nation, for the spirit of Israel, of devotion to the Jewish people and the land of Israel. Due solely to this Zionist education, most of our pupils withstood the horrors of the terrible war and were able to find their way to the land of Israel - the dream of our aspirations.
Due to his many talents and his devotion to the movement, he was called upon to fulfill other responsible tasks, such as: to serve as the vice-chair of the General Zionist Party in our city, as a member of the committees of the Keren Kayemet and the Keren Ha-Yesod, in the Zionist drama group, and other tasks.
[Page 398]
In the years 1934-1937, David Muller was chosen as a member of the regional leadership of Ha-No'ar Ha-Tziyoni in Volhynia, after which he was called to work for the main leadership of the movement in Warsaw, where he also studied law at the university until the outbreak of the Second World War.
During the war, David knew much hardship and great difficulties: he went through all the abominations of the ghetto, fled to the forests, and joined the ranks of the partisans that operated in the forests of Volhynia and fought against the cruel enemy until liberation. It seems to me that the direction of his life during this period, which was characterized by extremely prickly and painful thorns, left their mark in shaping his form and personality towards the realization of his nationalist-Zionist aspirations.
During the first half of 1944, after the Germans retreated from the eastern part of what was Poland at that time (western Ukraine and Belarus) and the Red Army advanced westward, David emerged from the forests with other partisans, came to Rivne, and from there found his way to Lublin. The temporary Polish government set up there under the protection of the USSR. The veteran Zionist, Dr. Emil Sommerstein, who had been freed earlier from a Soviet prison, served as a minister in this government.
As a devoted Zionist, David returned, along with other friends, to energetic action and immediately became one of the outstanding activists. He was one of those who created in Lublin the central Jewish committee at whose head stood Dr. E. Sommerstein zl, and most important, the Zionist party, Ichud. A new period of Zionist activity began in Poland at this time, of an entirely different nature than had been before the war. The Zionist movement of this period set as its highest goal, considering the new reality that had come about, getting the remnant of the Jews out of Poland and the USSR and bringing them, through every possible route, to Israel.
For this work, it was necessary to search in every possible place for the survivors of the activists of the Zionist parties and youth movements and to enlist them in this work. They looked for them among those coming out of the ghettos, the forests, and the concentration camps, among the partisans and those who had survived by hiding on the Aryan side, and thus was created the need of finding different paths to reach, too, additional activists who were spread around the USSR and to bring them to Poland as soon as possible. This was a difficult goal, full of danger in that period before repatriation from the USSR. In this area of action, too, David was revealed as one of the outstanding and leading ones.
At the time of the war, the Anti-Fascist Jewish Committee was founded in Moscow, at the head of which stood the famous Jewish actor, Shlomo Michaelis. In the spring of 1945, David Muller and Mr. Gris went to Moscow as representatives of the Central Jewish Committee in Lublin to meet and talk with people from the Anti-Fascist Jewish Committee about the Jews of Poland, scattered throughout the USSR.
David Muller and Gris also met with people from the Society of Polish Patriots in Moscow and there, in the society's offices, succeeded somehow in finding out the names and current whereabouts of friends known to them as activists of the Zionist youth movements from before the war. That was their principal goal.
Upon returning to Lublin, they enlisted and sent messengers with these lists all throughout the USSR, trying to meet with these friends and to bring them back to Poland through circuitous means and to enlist them in active Zionist work.
These messengers, some of whom were women, who dressed in the uniforms of officers of the new Polish army and were equipped with fake travel documents, as if they were only searching for family members in various places in the USSR. I note that one of these messengers was sent by David Muller to me, too, in Bukhara in Uzbekistan (I served there as the head of the Polish secondary school, where the youth of the Jews of Poland studied) with names and addresses of members of our movement from before the war who were in the USSR.
Thus there began in Rivne that thing called Ha-Bricha, which wrote a famous page in the history of illegal immigration (Aliyah Bet) from Europe to Israel. David Muller was one of the first who created and activated the Ha-Bricha organization in those days and served as a member of the central committee of Ha-Bricha.
When I returned to Poland, I found him completely occupied with the work of Ha-Bricha and with the main leadership of the
[Page 399]
Ha-No'ar Ha-Tziyoni Akiva movement in Lodz, a movement of which David Muller was one of the founders and leaders and one of the activists in the Ichud center in Warsaw.
Every one of the students and activists of the movements who came to Poland was immediately added by him to this holy work and this was, then, a very great amount of work and urgent. This was the period of the giant repatriation from the USSR of previous Polish citizens and the remnant of Polish Jewry among them. The huge wave of repatriation brought multitudes of Jews from the USSR to Poland and, among them, those who had been exiled to prisons and work camps between 1939 and 1941 for the crime of Zionist activity and also those who had fled to Russia at the very beginning of the outbreak of the Germany-USSR war. The Jews of western Poland returned, too, who also had been sent during 1939-1940 to work camps and to the forests of Siberia.
The four years of Ha-Bricha and the Ha-No'ar Ha-Tziyoni - Akiva movement in Poland after the Second World War, this was an important period in the struggles of the masses of the remnant for a new life. Among the activists and movers in this holy work was David Muller, one of those who stood out and was devoted. He put out a warm helping hand to his many friends and acquaintances during this time of need.
After the work in Poland was over, David, with the rest of the leaders of our movement, moved to Paris and there, too, he was engaged in matters of immigration and served as a member of the Center for Immigration in Europe and Africa.
In 1950, he immigrated with his family to Israel, for whose establishment he had dreamed and worked. Here in Israel, he found his place in service to the country and, after a while, was appointed - thanks to his abilities - as a regional director of the property tax and compensation fund of the Finance Ministry, where he fulfilled his tasks until retirement.
We are abandoned and in mourning that he left us too soon and is no longer among us. He was privileged to be interred in the soil of the homeland - the land of his dreams and aspirations.
We will remember our dear one, David. His lofty form will remain engraved on the hearts of us all. The lack of him in our midst will be felt for a long time.
Woe for those who are lost and cannot be replaced.

Among the six million holy martyrs who died in the horrific Shoah, there are 10,500 martyrs from our city of Ostroh, and every time that we remember the tragically cut-off lives of our holy Ostroh martyrs, we must light not two candles on that date, but 15,000 candles for their holy souls that perished in the Name of God.
Who from us does not remember the days of yom tov [religious holidays] in Ostroh? When it was either Rosh Hashana or Yom Kippur, the Ostroh Jews filled the shuls in the city, and in those God-fearing days, no Jew was seen in the streets of the city. Now, Ostroh is completely void of Jews, everything was destroyed, a desert, but their holy memory remains in our hearts.
And every time, when we remember the souls of the Ostroh martyrs, the holy faces arise before us, those of the rabbis and the great Torah scholars, at the head of which were Reb Efraim Guberman, HaRav Ginsberg, the Anopoler Rav, the Shimsker Rebbe, Reb Simcha'le, the Trisker Rebbe, Reb Fishel Greenberg, the head of the yeshiva, Reb Altrune's sons Velvele and Yosele, and Reb Yosele Sefard's sons, they all went as a group to Tashlich [Rosh Hashana practice of going to running water; e.g., pond, lake, etc., and reciting special prayer]. They were also chased by the Nazi murderers and Ukrainian killers to the massacre place, and their souls went up to heaven, reaching the heights in sanctification of God's Name.
10,000 Ostroh Jews fled the city before World War II. When it was the holiday of Simchas Torah [at the end of Sukkos], they went to the MaHarsha shul for hakafos [dancing with the Torah], and in other shuls as well, with several Torah scrolls in their hands. Who does not remember the Trisker Rebbe's dancing (the son-in-law of Reb Yossele) with the Torah scroll in the kloiz [private place of study] where the Maharshal wrote a treatise on the four sections of the Shulchan Aruch [Code of Jewish Law], and the Baal HaTaz [Rabbeinu David HaLevi Segal], author of Turei Hazahav [Rows of Gold; commentary on Jewish law], and he davened [prayed] there. These great scholars of the generation directed the yeshiva in Ostroh for about twenty to thirty years. Also, with the Shimsk Rebbe (a descendent of Reb Pinchas'el Koritzer), and also with Reb Alterti and Reb Yossele, the Jews prayed with great fervor [depth, trance-like sense].
[Page 401]
We have to be made of steel and iron in order to be able to carry the anguish and pain of our dearest Jews whom we lost forever. At the head of those was the vice-mayor, doctor of philosophy, Reb Kalman Frenkel (son of Reb Yakov Frenkel), who was the instructor of Professor Sigmund Freud and the sixteen Jewish councilmen:
Abelman Moshe
Eisenberg Shammai (owner of goods)
Ganik Sender
Gorin Mottel (died in Israel)
Geierman Michel (teacher, Tolpin's son-in-law)

Sefarad Yossele (treasurer)
The merchants' union no longer exists, handworkers' union, landlords' union, workers' union, people's bank. The orphanage is no longer. For masked events, these people shared their Purim costumes: Nuny Raitzes Greenberg, Rosa Lukatch, Polya Sternberg, and others. The orphanage had the name of the parents of Dr. Bernard Cohen (honorable president of Joint), whose cousin, Sophia Frishberg, was president, and the second president was Miriam Halbert.
The Jewish hospital is no longer, the Toz [Towarzystwo Ochrony Zdrowia ludności żydowskiej w Polsceci; Society for the Protection of the Health of the Jewish Population in Poland], the Jewish regional school, with the founders Zhebyn, Tolpin, and Mrs. Rosenstrum, the volkschule [public school], the city yeshiva, the Talmud Torah, the yeshiva with the name of the Maharsha. You no longer hear the melodies of Gemara studies as done by the sharp minds and the yeshiva boys. There is no longer a library with the name of Tzvi Bukimer. No longer is there a public library, the Keren Kayemet le'Yisrael [Jewish National Fund of Israel], which annually sent the mail [charity] of new year wishes and letters with blessings. There is no longer the Chanukah marketplace which made an exceptional impression on the entire city.
There are no longer the Zionist organizations and parties that carried out strong, well-organized activities in all areas of Jewish life. There is no longer the Revisionist movement that put out literary critiques, such as Frishman's Yizkor, Shakespeare's Shylock (of the Merchant of Venice), Uriel Acosta, the Kreutzer Sonata, and so on. There are no longer any with themes such as:
[Page 402]
Hertzl and Jabotinsky, Greenhouse Reform, Keren Kayemet; its meaning, Evolution, and Perspective, and so on.
There are no more uniformed youth going to the Maharsha school, and Beitar with the Brit Hachayal [Soldiers' Allegiance; Revisionist Zionist organization], with the orchestra playing on the yahrzeit of Hertzl, Jabotinsky, and Bialik. There are no more directors of the parties and youth organizations which, for years, ran with the socialist activities in town, and among them, were directors such as: of Mizrachi it was the scholar Moshe Abelman, Berl Linetzki the head of Keren Kayemet leYisrael, HaRav Mishna the secretary of Keren Kayemet leYisrael. Mrs. Adelman was of Women's Zionist Association of Agudah, Chaim Davidson for the League of Workers for Israel, Avraham Bukimer of the general Zionists. Dr. Yisrael Presman of Hechalutz [building leadership], the Zionist Youth, the students from the judicial faculty of Yaffa Katz, Dovid Shtulmeister, Fanny Finkelstein, and so on. From the Revisionist Association and Beitar, Buzi Chassid, students from the judicial faculty Gedalia Graliewski, Lyova Finkel, Misha Eisenstein, Avraham Eisenberg (son of the goods owner) doctor of economic science, Chana Eisenstein, a student of medicine and rabbinic studies Moshe Sirower, the coordinator of Beitar, Abrasha Abelman, of the polytechnic, Reuven Tuchbinder, teacher Bluma Shternberg, Sonia Greinems, Lyuba Shagam, and so on.
These were talented intellectuals who integrated into the political and societal life, and raised the Jewish life in town. And not by chance, Menachem Begin himself was inspired by these intellectuals. When he visited Ostroh twice, he wrote about the memories of Dr. Shimshon Juniczman, expressing the following:
I don't remember what kind of year it was. I certainly don't remember the exact date. But this was one of the first of the thirty years that Shimshon and I visited the southern edge of Poland, the geographic off track, but shining with Jewish intelligence, Ostroh. What a wonderous youth there was in that border town, and what a fine intellectualism was concentrated there in Beitar. There was a man there, his name was Chassid, one of the outstanding people whom I have met during my lifetime, and I merited, thank God, to work for a generation, with very talented people, and among them the amazing person Buzi Chassid and he too is no longer among the living. He breathed out his holy soul in a Russian prison, somewhere out there in cold Siberia. He was among the most wondrous Zionists who were snatched up by the Soviet government. They were arrested, herded out to the Soviet exile, and in the end, they were terminated.
This is a general description of a Zionist leader, as well as a description of one of our contemporaries, Buzi Chassid one of our young talents who shined in the Ostroh surface, and tragically had his young life end because of his Zionist activities, somewhere in a Siberian prison.
I now recite my Yizkor in memory of our destroyed town of Ostroh, for her wonderous Jews, for the spiritual Jewish societal life, for the traditional Jews, for everyone's holy face, all of which live only in our memory. May they all be eternal in our Yizkor Book, Sefer Ostroh.
