I Will Remember These . . .
A List of the Jews of Braslav [Braslaw]
and the Surrounding Area
Who Perished in the Holocaust

Dedicated also to those who are not remembered here and for whom no redeemer remained . . .

Translated from the Hebrew by Laia Ben-Dov (page 466) and Jeff Deitch (pages 467-496)

Donated by Jeff Deitch, with Comments in Brackets

[The list on pages 467-496 shows the remembered dead for each of 10 out of the 12 communities in this memorial book, omitting mention only of the two very small communities of Okmenitz and Zarach. The period covered was between the time of the Nazi occupation in late June 1941 and the end of the war. For Okmenitz and Zarach, at least some of its dead --- members of the Dagovitz family in Okmenitz and of the Reichel family in Zarach --- were listed instead under Braslav.

The memorial book doesn't say when or how the list was compiled. Presumably it was based mainly on the collective memory of the small number of survivors, gathered sometime between the war's end and the book's publication in Israel in 1986. In some cases, these memories might have been supplemented by the recollections of those who had left the region shortly before the Nazis invaded in June 1941.

The list is fundamentally important but not all-inclusive or error-free. As acknowledged in the book's dedication at the top of this page, some of the dead couldn't be included because there was no one left alive to remember them. For example, the Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945, Volume II-B, published in 2012, gave an estimate of 3,000 for the prewar Jewish population of the town of Braslav, of whom only about 70 were said to have survived. For Opsa, which had at least 300 Jewish inhabitants, the number of survivors might have been as few as one: Motke Rosenberg. It was impossible for the survivors who compiled the list to recall everyone in their respective communities. Their gathering of names for this memorial book was a heroic attempt.

For those who were recalled and included in the list, mistakes might sometimes have been made; survivors' memories weren't perfect. In a few cases a son or daughter who was married might appear twice, listed under both their parents and separately with their spouse, and so on.

Pages 467-496 list 3,339+ people; the total is approximate because for some families the survivors said that there were children but didn't say how many. If a rough estimate of a Jewish population of 4,000-4,500 in the Braslav region at June 1941 is accurate, then some 660-1,160 of the victims, or 17%-26%, weren't mentioned in the list. But the list gives an approximate idea of the size of each community before June 1941 and the scale of the enormous loss.

The names in the list can be compared with other sources such as the online database of victims at Yad Vashem. That database contains translations of names of many people from this list (not always fully accurate), supplemented by further information and names provided by survivors, as well as by other sources that have come to light. Yad Vashem's database too is fundamentally important but not free of error. So the list in this memorial book can serve as a useful basis for comparison.

Number of Dead in the List on Pages 467-496
Estimate of the Jewish Population in Each Place before June 1941 (in the Case of Yod, December 1941)
Braslav 1,734+ Some 3,000 Jews, out of the town's total 5,000 inhabitants, plus some Jewish refugees from elsewhere (according to Encyclopedia of Camps and Ghettos, 1933-1945; some survivors' estimates of Braslav's prewar Jewish population are higher)
Yod 435+ 450 Jews just before the massacre that began on December 17, 1941, plus some Jewish refugees from Lithuania and Latvia (according to From Victims to Victors, a memoir by survivors from Yod)
Dubina 327+ 320 Jews (according to page 381 of this memorial book), but was perhaps closer to around 340-350
Opsa 199+ 300 Jews (according to page 354 of this memorial book)
Rimshan 192
Yaisi 144 About 20 Jewish families (according to page 400 of this memorial book)
Slobodka 126+ Close to 40 Jewish families, out of the roughly 200 families there (according to page 445 of this memorial book)
Kislovshchitzna 92
Plusy 66
Zamosh 24 About 10 Jewish families, out of the 100 families there (according to page 393 of this memorial book)
Total 3,339+ The number of Jewish inhabitants killed in the region in 1941-44 has been estimated at approximately 4,000-4,500]
