We Shall Remember!

by A. Shlonsky

We shall remember our townspeople of Rachov and its surroundings, the tortured martyrs, they who were felled by the sword and the hunger. Men, women, the elderly and the young, cut down in the Holocaust, not privileged to hear the steps of liberation.

We shall remember them all – they whose cries went unheard, whom a flood of blood swept into the abyss, of whom no trace has remained, whom the earth swallowed up into nameless graves, whose ashes were scattered across seas and continents. We the surviving townspeople of Rachov and its surroundings, shall remember them with sacred reverence.

We shall remember with pride and glory the daring and courageous partisan-avengers, and the no less brave who spit into the faces of their tormentors and were killed on the spot.

We shall remember them who had kept themselves alive during the Holocaust, but whose strength did not suffice to maintain them until the day of liberation.

We shall remember our faithful community leaders and workers, who dedicated themselves to the teaching of the young, with longing for the redemption about to come to our land, for in their death they have bidden us life, in the free State of Israel, awaiting the ingathering of its sons.

We shall remain loyal to their sacred memory, as long as the breath of life is still within us. May their memory be uplifted in the high reaches of the saintly and the pure, and may their names and memory be bright as the splendor of the firmament!

These eyes of mine have witnessed disaster
And laid their lament on my tormented heart.
Yet I felt a compassion that bade me: “Forget all!”
Until came the days of unatoned horror,
And the oath / took was: “Remember it always!
Remember! Remember! Let naught be forgotten!”
