A few Notes About Zionist Activity

by Dov First

Translated by Miriam Leberstein

Two delegates from Nowy Dwor attended the 4th Zionist national conference in Poland, which took place August 18–21, 1919: Reb [respectful form of address] Shimshen Note Srebrenik (#170 on the list of delegates) and Lipe Mundlak (#150). At the conference, Lipe Mundlak joined Yisroel Mereminski's Tseiri Zion faction. Greetings were sent by telegram by the leadership of the Nowy Dwor Jewish kehile [organized Jewish community], other Zionist organizations, and the Jewish faction in the city council.

The report of the 5th national conference of Zionist organizations in Poland (Lodz, July 21–August 5, 1921) indicates that in the year prior to the conference 575 shekels [tokens denoting contributions to the Zionist cause] had been sold in Nowy Dwor. The only delegate from Nowy Dwor to this conference was Lipe Mundlak.

At the 6th national conference of Zionist organizations (April 17–20, 1923), Reb Shimen Note Srebrenik was the delegate from Nowy Dwor.

A table In the report of the Zionist central committee of Poland for the time period January 13, 1930 –January 31, 1932, listing the number of members sent by all the towns, shows that Nowy Dwor had 106 pre–registered members of Zionist organizations at the 9th conference (January 5–6, 1930) and only 50 registered members at the 10th conference.

During the period covered by the report the following speakers visited Nowy Dwor: Yitshak Grinboym, Levi Gutgeld, Dr. Shtroyboym, Pinkes Fogelman, Moyshe Kleynboym and A. Klarman. In the same report there is an overview of Keren Hayesod [Foundation Fund] indicating that for the period October15, 1929 to September 30, 1931, 1781 zlotys were raised in Nowy Dwor, with 925 paid in cash.

The report of the Zionist central committee for the 11th national conference, which covered the period from February 4, 1932 to August 26, 1934, indicates that the number of members from Nowy Dwor attending the 10th convention was 50, and for the 11th convention, 91.
