About 6 o'clock in the morning, late in July of 1936, a man walked through the shtetl of Lyntupy (now Belarus), knocking at each of his neighbors' doors. He wanted to share with them his happy news, that a daughter had been born to join his four sons! That man was my father. We were a very happy family for five years. Then, in the summer of 1941, our happiness was shattered when Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union. Our shtetl and those of the surrounding regions were occupied by German troops and became ghettos. Of our family, only two of usmyself, the daughter, and my mother-- survived. I wish to share with you the story of our survival.
