About the illustrations of A. D. Fishbeyn:

The editorial board of the Yizkor-Bukh expresses its thanks to our landsman [countryman], A. D. Fishbeyn for his beautiful illustrations in this book.

In the synagogue illustration, he exhibited a remarkable pictorial memory with the precise architectural details. Thirty years after leaving Grayeve, he succeeded brilliantly in conveying the marvelous beauty of the synagogue.

In the illustration, “Between minkhe [afternoon prayers] and mayrev [evening prayers], Fishbeyn portrays a typical scene of the old bes-medresh [house of study], where he spent much time in his childhood. The types are varied, including the gifted Talmud scholar, the artisan listening respectfully to the scholar's hair-splitting argumentation; the dreamer, reflecting on other matters – each with his characteristic expression.

A different impression is given by the illustration of the old part of the cemetery – who does not remember the mysterious fear that emanated from there and overwhelmed children, even from a distance?

The artist succeeded in precisely presenting not only the local scene, but also expressing the feelings of his and our childhood years. Once again, many thanks for this heartfelt contribution to the Yizkor-Bukh.

Meir Vaks, Yisakhar Vodovsky and Shimen Kolko. The photo was taken in New York in 1906. Vaks and Kolko returned to Grayeve, where they perished during the war
