West Byfleet, West Surrey

West Byfleet (population about 6,000) is a village in west Surrey, just to the west of the M25 London Orbital Motorway. It lies about seven to eight miles southeast and east of the border of Greater London (London Boroughs of Hounslow, Richmond upon Thames and Kingston upon Thames). It is also situated about three miles east of Woking and about nine miles north of Guildford. Since 1974, West Byfleet has been part of the local government district and Borough of Woking, and was previously within the urban district of Woking from 1933, remaining at all times within the county of Surrey.

Jewish Community

Although the modern Jewish community in West Surrey is believed to date back to Jewish settlement in Guildford in the early twentieth century, the area witnessed a significant influx of Jews in the early days of World War II with the establishment of a number of evacuee communities, in Guildford, Woking, Addlestone, Staines, Egham, Epsom and Dorking. Subsequently Progressive congregations were established in the area and, recently, a Chabad centre had been opened.
