Background

From 1940-1947, Miranda de Ebro, a city in northern Spain, contained the central prison camp in Spain for foreign prisoners.  Some were non-Spaniards who had been captured in Spain's civil war.  Some were persons who had crossed the border illegally.  And, finally, some were German military personnel and collaborators who entered Spain near the end of WWII.  The largest number of prisoners appears to have been French, but many nationalities are present, including Americans.

This collection consists of an index of the prisoners held at some time at this prison.  The information in this index on each prisoner is limited to name and nationality.  Religion is not given, but judging by surnames, the percentage of Jews is small.  There is a registration card, containing possibly additional information for each person, giving place and date of birth, marital status, pre-war residence, name of father and time of arrest in Spain.  Persons seeking such information on individuals may submit requests at:

Database

There were many cases where it was difficult to read the names from the original documents.  In order to try to return all applicable records during a search, the database includes all alternate spellings.
