JEWISH TRADERS/BUSINESSES IN LONDON - 1769-1839

Compiled by Dr. David Barnett

This is a database of Jewish Traders/Businesses in London during the period 1769-1839.  The data, comprising over 5,000 records, was extracted by Dr. David Barnett, from the following sources:

  • 1769-75 Sun Fire Office registers
  • 1781 Lowndes London directory
  • 1799 Howden’s Triennial directory
  • 1822 Underhill’s Triennial directory
  • 1819-25 Sun and other London Fire Office registers
  • 1827-1828 Pigot’s London & Provincial New Commercial directory
  • 1830s Sun Fire registers
  • 1836 Pigot’s Alphabetical Directory of London

The data has been edited, consolidated and reformatted for the JCR-UK database by Laurence Harris.

Each record comprises the following fields:
Surname; Forename(s); Address of the trade/business; Type of trade/business/profession; London postal district; Year of entry; Data source (see above for list of sources).

All of the directories are available at the Guildhall Library London.

The original insurance policies (Sun and others) are also held at the Guildhall Library.  The policy numbers/volumes were not computerised, so tracking down the specific policy will prove an almost impossible task (until a name index of the policies of this period is published).  Dr. Barnett’s has retained manuscript notes of most of the relevant policy numbers, and has indicated that if anyone requires a single individual reference then he would be prepared to search his records.  He may be contacted by e-mail at D.Barnett@tesco.net.
