JewishGen Danzig/Gdańsk Research Division Project:
Danzig documents at the Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz, Berlin-Dahlem

Description:
The Geheimes Staatsarchiv Preußischer Kulturbesitz (GStA PK) in Berlin-Dahlem has vast holdings of documents from the former Kingdom of Prussia, including Danzig. Especially valuable are census-like records covering the various Danzig communities, but there are also records concerning individuals, such as marriage concessions and legal contracts. Much of this material pre-dates the adoption of fixed surnames by Danzig's Jews, but can sometimes be connected to later records with surnames through the use of other sources.

An inventory of sources at the GStA PK with Jewish content can be found in volumes 2 and 5 of Quellen zur Geschichte der Juden in den Archiven der neuen Bundesländer by Stefi Jersch-Wenzel and Reinhard Rürup. If you have easy access to these books (e.g., from a local university library), please contact us.

Status:
Acquisitions and indexing status are shown in the table below. All acquisitions so far have come at no cost, since the GStA PK permits photography of these documents by visitors without charge. Thank you very much to the GStA PK for their assistance and permission to make this valuable genealogical material available on JewishGen.

We need additional help transcribing, proofreading, and acquiring documents from GStA PK. If you can read old German handwriting (Kurrent) or are able to visit the archive in Berlin to photograph documents, please contact us to learn more about volunteering.
