This list of the martyrs of Dembitz, who perished in the Holocaust, which is presented down in this section, was gathered from natives of our city and the neighboring villages under very difficult circumstances. We have attempted not to omit anyone – relatives reported about their families, neighbors about their neighbors and acquaintances, but nevertheless, we could not always obtain complete information, especially with respect to children and elderly parents. In some cases we were unable to determine the relationships between those mentioned in this list, and it is possible that, aside from the omissions, there are also errors. With this in mind, we beg forgiveness from the relatives and friends who perhaps will be upset. May the souls of the forgotten ones be bound up for eternity alongside all those mentioned.

The family tree of the Rabbis of Dembitz of the Horowitz family.

Translated by Jerrold Landau

[1] Until the time of the outbreak of the terrible war and the extinguishing of the lights, when the days froze and the holy legacy of generations drowned in the sea of blood at the hands of the cruel Germans may their names and memories be blotted out, at the time of the liquidation of the ghetto and work camp of Dembitz in the months of Nissan 5703. May G-d avenge their blood and may their memories be a blessing to intercede for good upon the Jewish people, so that they may merit to wreak vengeance upon their enemies and witness the comfort of Zion and Jerusalem a the time of the advent of the righteous redeemer, may it be soon, Amen.

The first Admor and head of the rabbinical court of Dembitz was the holy Rabbi Reuven Horowitz the son of the holy Rabbi Eliezer, the head of the rabbinical court of Dzikow, who was the son of Rabbi Naftali of Ropczyce of holy blessed memory, who was the son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Menachem Rubin, the head of the rabbinical court of Lisko, who was the son of the holy Gaon Reb Yaakov of holy blessed memory, the head of the rabbinical court of Lisko.

The above mentioned holy Rabbi Menachem (Rubin) Lisker was the son-in-law of the holy Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak HaLevi Ish Horowitz of holy blessed memory, the head of the rabbinical court of the three holy communities known as Ahe [2] (Hamburg, Altona, and Essenbach). He was the son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Yaakov Halevi Ish Horowitz of holy blessed memory, known as Reb Yokel, the head of the rabbinical court of Glogow. He was the son of the holy Gaon Reb Meir HaLevi, the head of the rabbinical court of Tyktin. He was the son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Shemlke HaLevi Ish Horowitz of holy blessed memory, the head of the rabbinical court of Tarnow. He was the son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Yehoshua Aroch, the head of the rabbinical court of Premisla, and who can trace his holy roots back to the holy Rashal and Rashi, and all the way back until King David, may peace be upon him.

After the death of the holy Gaon Rabbi Reuven of holy blessed memory, his eldest son the holy Gaon Rabbi Alter was appointed as the head of the rabbinical court of Dembitz. He died, may Heaven protect us, after a short time without leaving any children. His younger brother, the Gaon Rabbi Shmuel Horowitz of holy blessed memory, was accepted as the rabbi and head of the rabbinical court.

Rabbi Shmuel was the son-in-law of the Gaon and Tzadik of Przytiki, who was a descendent of holy stock, of Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhensk of holy blessed memory and of Rabbi Kopel of Lukow. He died in his fifty-fourth year, and his son the holy Gaon Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech, may G-d avenge his blood, was appointed in his stead. He conducted the rabbinate until the end of the city, which was destroyed by the cruel ones, may their names and memories be blotted out.

The following are the holy sons of the Gaon and Tzadik Rabbi Shmuel of holy blessed memory, who were killed by unnatural deaths by the enemies until the year 5703, may G-d avenge their blood.

a) His son the Gaon and Rabbi Tzvi Elimelech, the last head of the rabbinical court of Dembitz of the Horowitz family. His wife was Hinda the daughter of the holy Gaon and Tzadik, the Admor of Ropszyce, of the Shapira family, descended from the Blazowa and Dinowa dynasties. They were killed with their four daughters, may G-d avenge their deaths.

b) The holy Tzadik Rabbi Chaim Yaakov, who was killed in Dembitz along with his wife Sara of an important family from Przytiki, along with their four children.

c) His daughter Nechama along with her husband the Tzadik Rabbi Moshe Halberstam of Tzanz, who was a son and grandson of holy rabbis and Admorim, along with five children, may G-d avenge their blood.

d) His daughter Etel and her husband the Tzadik and Gaon Rabbi Shlomo Eichenstein, who was the rabbi and head of the rabbinical court of the communities of Chodorow and Siedliska, a descendent of the Zidichov and other dynasties, along with their seven children, may G-d avenge their deaths.

e) His daughter Mirl along with her six children, may G-d avenge their blood. Her husband the Gaon Rabbi A. Wagschal of Radomysl was saved with the help of G-d, and lives with his new family in the United States.

f) His daughter Beila along with her three children, and their father the Gaon and Tzadik Rabbi Avrahamile Horowitz, may G-d avenge their blood. He was the son of the holy rabbi and Gaon Rabbi Eliahu Horowitz of holy blessed memory of Zwolen, the son of the holy Gaon Rabbi Naftali Chaim of holy blessed memory, who set up his home in the Land of Israel and died there. He was the descendent of the holy Admorim of Dzikow, Ropszyce, Tzanz, may their merit protect us.

A lone daughter of the Tzadik Rabbi Avrahamile and his wife Beila of Dembitz, the Rebbetzin Rechil, may she live long, was saved with Divine mercy after suffering great tribulations. She was hidden in the Dembitz ghetto in the attic of a gentile house for more than 24 months along with members of her first husband's family – the Wolf and Reich families of Dembitz.. Her first husband was murdered in the Plaszow Concentration Camp, may G-d avenge his blood. After the liberation she married her relative Rabbi Yoel Halperin, who was the rabbi of Jaslow and the chief rabbi of Bergen-Belsen after the liberation. Today, they live in the United States, and he is the rabbi of the Jaslow and Dembitz communities of New York.

The fourth daughter of the holy rabbi and Gaon, Rabbi Shmuel Horowitz of blessed memory, Rebetzin Chava Perel, may she live long, along with her husband the Tzadik and Gaon Rabbi Yitzchak Horowitz, the Admor of Mielec may he live long, and their five children live in the United States, having arrived before the war.

By Rabbi Yoel Halperin, the head of the Rabbinic court of Jaslow and Bergen-Belsen from the Ropczyce-Tsanz-Premishlan-Zolochow lines. Author of “Asuf Takanot Agunot”. Currently residing in Brooklyn. May G-d protect him, Amen.
