I grew up in Benoni and I took the pictures while on a visit there about 6 years ago [1995?]. I believe the synagogue building dates from about 1933.

Benoni was a thriving Jewish community, even supporting a Jewish Day School in the late 1960's and 70's. As a child I used to sing in the Shul choir, and the choir loft, situated above the ark, is clearly visible in the one picture, taken from the ladies gallery looking towards the ark. The other is taken from the choir loft itself looking down into the room. This second view is, of course, the one I remember best - many long hours spent in that choir loft. Click to view [153 KBytes]
