Ujlak - Nový Sad

(Novosad, Slovakia)

48°32' 21°44'

Yehuda Spiegel, Netanya

Ujlak is a farming village in the environs of Sečovce, that was also known by the Slovakian name - Nový Sad or Ujlak next to Trebišov, and in it was a relatively large concentration of Jews - out of 1,500 residents, 140 were Jews. The Jewish community was independent with a rabbi, schochet, mohel,[1] synagogue, mikvah, and cemetery. From a municipal point of view, the village belonged to Sečovce - as trade was conducted through Sečovce.

In 1938, with the arrival of the Hungarians, the village was cut off from Sečovce and from then until 1945 the village was absorbed into the district of Sátoraljaújhely. In 1939 under Hungarian rule, orders restricting the Jews began: prohibition on engaging in the “white collar” professions,[2] craftsmanship, and trade; the establishment of forced labor camps, and the deportation to Poland of those lacking Hungarian citizenship.

In 1944 all the Jews were exiled to the Ghetto in Sátoraljaújhely, and from there sent to Auschwitz. Out of 140 Jews, only 42 survived. At the end of World War II (1945), all of the region was returned to Czechoslovakia. Holocaust survivors left to live, mostly, in the surrounding villages. My late father, Eugene Jacob Spiegel, served many years as the head of the community in Ujlak. In October 1945 he settled in Sečovce.[3] By the end of 1957, he moved his residence to Košice and it was also there where he engaged in public affairs with trust and was elected as the head of the community. He died at a ripe old age[4] (1978) and was buried in Košice, his soul resting in Eden.

The Jews of Ujlak immigrated to different countries, many to Israel. The cemetery still stands. But more, not a trace remains of the institutions.

Ujlak - Nový Sad served as the rural center of more than nine surrounding villages. And in them, the number of Jews reached roughly 140.

The names of these villages were:

Imreg, Baranč, Garan, Gerčel, Jastreb, Sirneg, Cejkov, Kašov, and Kista.
