I am requesting a clarification of the location in Russia written on Line 1 in Column 10 and also in Column 11 on a 1910 US passenger manifest for Ite Zarchin. Family were known to have lived in Borisov and Zembin but clearly this location is different.

On  Response
1/16/2020 12:07 AM Sounds like a rendering of Borisov (even closer to its Byelorussian pronunciation)
1/16/2020 8:33 PM WARISCHEW (Wieruszów)
1/17/2020 2:22 AM Lookslike Warischew to me, as well.
1/17/2020 5:03 AM Clearly looks like Warischew. Asked myself, how would I pronounce this? Came up with "Varishev," which leads to Wieruszów, Poland, or "Varishov," which leads to Barysaw (Borisov), Belarus.
1/17/2020 6:58 AM Warischew, and it's in the Wolhynia gubernia. Remember that for Polish and German speakers, the "V" sound is written with a W. So, "Varischev" in the Volhynia gubernia. Keep in mind that Ite knew how to read and write, but the manifest doesn't specify in what language. Being literate in Yiddish or Russian wouldn't necessarily mean that Ite could have spelled the name of the town in the language the person writing out the manifest was using. Varischev is what they *heard*.
1/17/2020 7:00 AM Also, the manifest ought to have two pages, of which you've shown the first. The last column on the *second* page ought to list the name of the town where Ite was born. Is that also Varischev?
