On  Response
9/12/2019 9:21 AM Magánzó: no outside income/wages. This could be due to anything from unemployment to being rich, but the most common application was to retirees, i.e. people who were no longer wage-earners. (The literal translation, and the only usage that survives to the modern day, is "loner". In German records, the word is Privatier.)
9/13/2019 2:59 PM "a person of independent means", i.e. without a recognized occupation or trade.
9/21/2019 3:47 PM There is another good English word for this: rentier. It means a person living off of independent sources of income, pension, investments, property rentals, etc.
