I am trying to determine the hometown of Samuel Hodes from the WWI Registration Card. It appears to be a town in Russia but I cannot make out the name of the town. If I can narrow down the name, it will help to identify where I need to search for it further.

4/10/2019 7:54 PM Hello: I also think it looks very much like Smorgon. It is also known by the Russian of "Smarhon" and is/was in Belarus. There is a lot of information about this place online. -Philis
4/11/2019 1:46 AM Hello Sheldon,

The previous responses seem to be heading you in the right direction for the town.

Using the JewishGen Town Finder Database (with the phoeneti/soundex option) you will be able to see the different names and spellings "Smorgan" has had over three various time periods. It will also provide a connection to a few hundred names of researchers with families in that town also. If you are not already familiar with this tool, it is worth checking it out.

Good luck in your search....Jo
4/13/2019 9:18 AM I agree that the town of origin would be Smorgonie or Smorgon that was in the Vilna District Poland now Belarus. By 1897 there were 6,743 Jews in Smorgon. I found this in the Encyclopedia for Jewish Life. Good luck.
