This is a death record of Juda Steinbach from Bardejov (Bartfa)now in Slovakia - previously in the Saros county of Hungary. Juda was buried in Zborov - a nearby town where several of my Steinbach relatives lived.
I am trying to identify his town of birth - magnified at the top of the image.
The most likely reading seems to be Babar but it could be an odd looking Baber, Bober or something quite different that I haven't thought of. Since another Steinbach member of his generation was born in Tarnov near Zborov, I have been looking for this village/town in the Saros area. But it might be further off. I have found nothing that fits persuasively.
Another idea: maybe this is a now unused Germanic name for a village that now has a very different Slovakian or Hungarian name (like many in the Bratislava region - further West)?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

9/27/2017 7:33 PM As written, it should most likely represent "Baber," very much less likely "Babor," and certainly not "Babar." This is only according to the writing; I have no suggestions about these possible places.
9/28/2017 12:14 AM Hi David,

Try BAKAR on the JewishGen Townfinder site. This might be what you need. There is a listing, so be sure to read across all of the time periods and changes of country's borders. I'd be interested to know if this is the town?

9/28/2017 11:56 PM It is most probably BEHER, today's BECHEROV, only 6km from Zborov.
9/29/2017 1:16 AM just guessing, but bobov is 28 miles away, and a well-known hassidic dynasty.
