4/17/2013 7:40 PM Hello Roberta,

I believe that the inscription is as follows: Gedalyihu Ben/(son of) Reb Yechiel HaLevi died on the 30th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev (and the Hebrew year). The final five Hebrew letters are an acronym which stands for: "May his soul be bound up in the bonds of everlasting life".

The word "Reb" is a title of honor and respect placed before the given name of a male, however it does NOT imply rabbi.

I checked a little further for you regarding the name Gedalyahu, as I was only familiar with the name Gedalia. It is a correct form and a variation of Gedalia. Using the Given Name Database of JewishGen, I found that Charles is the English equivalent as noted under the Russian database, so perhaps his family roots were from somewhere in the Russian part of Europe.

Hope that this is helpful to you....Jo
