Can anyone identify this shtetl? This is from my great grandfather's Petition for Naturalization and is the listed birthplace of his wife, my great grandmother.

7/9/2012 3:56 PM Hello Ken,

What I see in the image is either "Dusyd" or "Dusjd". If you are able to access the JewishGen site, then search on the "Town Finder" database. Make sure that you use the soundex system of search and that you look through all of the time period columns for each town. There might be a town that is very similar and at one point was in the Russian area.

If you are unable to access that particular site, let me know....Jo

It may help to study handwriting of the entire page for similarities. It will also help to study the map of the area where your great grandmother came, or may have come from.
For guessing games, there is an excellent compilation of geographic names at http://www.fallingrain.com/world/index.html

Good luck!
