This is the grave of my Great Grand Father Yaakov Meguiris, who passed away in Lisbon on 14 Kislev 5640. There are a few words that I cannot read on the grave:

The first line reads "Matsevat Kvoura".

I cannot read the following :

1) on the 2nd line : first and second words
2) on the 5th line: what does the last word mean : "Leyitsi"

Many thanks - Michel Zaffran

6/17/2012 1:18 AM second line first word is "hamishneh" [=assistant?]
second word is abbreviation for "kvod harav", probably on honorary title. If he were rabbi of a community there probably would have been a much more impressive title.

"Leyitzi" is short for "liyetira" [= to the creation] i.e. the number of years since the creation, which is our present system of dating years.
6/17/2012 9:15 AM "monument of burial
the anointed honoured rabbi yaakov megiris
of the residents of argil
departed on the 14th day of the month of kislev
of the year 5640 from the creation of the world
may his soul be bound up in the bond of life"

notes:

1st word of 2nd line seems to be "hamashiah", which means "the anointed", rather than "hamishne", because the second-last letter has no bottom part that i can see.

3rd line can have 2 meanings: either he was one "of the residents", or the stone was donated "by the residents". i have chosen the 1st, but either reading is possible.

4th line, "nilvah" is used mostly on sephardic monuments.
