Joseph and Anna (Dorfman) Confeld came to America, 1885 from Kishinev, Russia (Bessarabia) and lived in the Jewish settlement Painted Woods, North Dakota (near Bismarck) in 1885.

Is this a photo (or copy of the original) of families taken at Painted Woods, ND around 1885? If so, who are any of the persons pictured?

10/18/2011 12:58 PM Dear Richard,

In 2010, I discovered an enclave of four generations of my maternal GF's mother's family (the Goldsteins of Kupyn, Kamenets-Podolsk) who had settled in Grand Forks, ND, in the 1880s.   Having grown up in Minneapolis, I found it odd indeed that my grandfather, Morris Gross (born circa 1896 in Marculesti, Bessarabia), never mentioned their existence.  Of course, all were long gone at least several decades before my birth, but I do not accept that as the sole reason for his having neglected to say word one about them.  I'm uncovering details and making certain suppositions that go further toward an explication, but that's another ten stories.  In any case, several of my male ancestors share names with several of the Painted Woods settlers.  They may in fact be related, but I believe the Goldsteins of PW moved to Portland some time during the late 1880s/early 1890s.

Still, I scan the faces of those pictured, hoping to recognize something, anything.  I suspect some of the Oregonian Goldsteins are pictured.

Please contact me if I can be of further assistance. I cannot ID anyone, but I have been to ND and researched PW a bit.

Yours truly,
Barbara Grossman
5/1/2014 12:38 PM Based on date-determination assistance from the Family Tree Magazine photo detective Maureen A. Taylor, the original photo was probably taken circa 1900. See and click on her Nov. 2011 entry for the article on this. I later determined that my Confeld family after their time in Painted Woods, ND homesteaded in the 1890's in Anoka County, Minnesota. My best guess now is that this photo was taken in Anoka County circa late 1890's, possibly in front of the barn (or other farm structure) in their backyard. It's still possible that some of these persons were at Painted Woods, ND in the 1880's. I have not yet identified anyone, though I still suspect that some of my Confeld and Dorfman ancestors are in the photo.
1/20/2016 8:02 AM I believe I have now identified at least two Confeld ancestors in this photo: the tall young man under the left side of the window, and the man sitting with suspenders on the left of the first row of adults. Also, the man in the middle of the first row of adults may be Joseph Confeld (born circa 1845-1850 Bessarabia). I still believe there are more Confeld and Dorfman ancestors in this photo. It may have been taken somewhere in Anoka County, MN around 1898.
