This pastel has been handed down by a paternal aunt. Can anyone provide any ideas on who she might be -- background, religiosity, location in Germany? Is this a wedding picture, perhaps? Possible artist? Picture's value? See also writing on back of picture. Thank you. Ronnie Hess

11/29/2010 10:01 AM Both men and women wore neck ruffs as a part of traditional Jewish dress for several centuries in Germany. Hers is smaller than those worn in past centuries, but in keeping with the overall costume of the period. Ava Cohn
12/7/2010 3:12 PM Hello. I am an artist and have studied some art history. My guess is that this represents a well off Jewish married woman. She seems to wear a wedding ring and the hat could be part of the modesty required by married women. It is a fine quality pastel so whoever requested it must have been in good economic standing. I wish I could help you more but other than guessing a time frame of the 1860's because of the dress tyle, I cannot help further. Can you make out the artist's signature?
