Is the uniform shown that of the French Foreign Legion in the early 1920s, or is it from some military organization in Germany, such as a school, of the same era? The man in the picture had joined the French Foreign Legion in the early 1920s.

10/7/2010 8:08 AM I'm answering my own post, but thank you for the link. I'd looked at French uniform and medal sites, but none this good.
Have since enlarged the portion of the photo with the medals and am guessing that the second is the Medaille Coloniale (Medaille d'Outre-Mer) -- or the Colonial Medal/Overseas Medal. I think it's safe to say that he's wearing a Legion uniform. Any idea of rank? There is a double chevron on the collar. Equivalent of a Pfc?

10/8/2010 12:36 AM Hello Judith,
I can't help with the uniform, but is that a scar over his left eyebrow? If so, does this help to date your photo for you?

It could be a scar, but on enlargement appears more like an artifact -- probably a small piece of fiber on the photo. Thanks.
