I found this photograph among the papers of my cousin, a Holocaust survivor who died in 2019. He lived in Kovno and Gargzdai, Lithuania, during the Holocaust and later immigrated to New York. He visited Lithuania in the 1990s when the photographs were taken.

Can anyone translate the tombstone? I'm wondering if my cousin took the photograph because the tombstone was for a member of our family, either the Olschwanger family or Birman family.

11/16/2022 4:05 PM Here lies

the young [unmarried] man NACHUM ARYEH

son of Reb Avraham Mendel

from the city of Maishar/Maisar [?]

who was killed by the guards of the ______

on the 27th day of Sivan

of the year 5667

May his soul be bound up in the bond of life.

===================================================

The 27th of Sivan, 5667, corresponds to June 8th/9th 1907.

The missing word in the preceding translation is “border”, so he was killed by border guards in 1907. It would be interesting to know the circumstances.
