Also had Hebrew lessons with Rabbi Katz who was the Rabbi and Shochet. My dad had a grocery shop in Braamfontein; Zlotnick's Cash Bazaar. The Braamfontein Shul was situated in Smit Street near the corner of Rissik Street, just above the railway station. I think it was in use until about 1946 and was then sold. As I wrote, Rev. Katz [I think he was a Rev.] walked with a limp and a walking stick and lived at the top of Jorisson Street where he used to
shochet chickens in his back yard.

We lived in Parktown North and my Dad had his shop until about 1965. I was a member of Bnei Akiva, married a Port Elizabeth girl and we went on Aliya in 1961. We went to the Parkview Greenside Shul. The Rav was Rabbi Lew and the Chazan in the early days was Kossowitski.

The shul was sold to Anglo-American in, I would guess, 1965 and the funds and contents, Torahs, etc., were donated to the Yeshiva in Johannesburg. My Grandfather, Saul Pillemer, was very active in the shul. | |
