Pittsburgh Area Jewish Communities

Pittsburgh's Jewish Criterion was the first English language weekly Jewish newspaper in America and published from 1895 to 1962. These special issues contain original news and historic accounts of Jewish communities in the Pittsburgh tri-state area (western PA, eastern Ohio, and northern West Virginia). There are many photos of people and places as well as interesting display advertisements.

A few large issues are on the Carnegie-Mellon Library website and you will need to click on the issue number at the top of the page, ignore error messages, and  download the entire edition to a PDF by clicking the 2 diskette icon. You may also save the issue to your PC. Smaller issues are on the Kehilalinks website  and will start in your PDF reader after a short delay.
