Town of Carmarthen

Carmarthen (in Welsh: Caerfyrddin), a town on the river Towy in south Wales, about eight miles north of the Bay of Carmarthen, has a population of about 14,000.  It lies about 23 miles northwest of Swansea.

Until 1974, it formed the municipal borough of Carmarthen in the county of Carmarthenshire, of which it was (and is) the county town. From 1974 until 1996, it was part of the district of Carmarthen (covering an area larger than the municipal borough) in the newly-formed county of Dyfed. In 1996, Carmarthen was merged with neighbouring authorities to form the reconstituted county of Carmarthenshire, a unitary authority (within the ceremonial, or preserved, county of Dyfed).

Carmarthen Jewish Community

Jews are known to have been living in Carmarthen in the mid-nineteenth century, although there is no knowledge of an organised Jewish congregation being established, nor a Jewish cemetery.
