Notes & Sources ( returns to text above)

  • (i) Reserved.

  • (ii) This was the address for the congregation listed in Jewish Year Books from 1955.

  • (iii) Note in Jewish Year Books from 1955.

  • (iv) The United Synagogue 1870-1970 by Aubrey Newman (1977), pp. 222/3 refers to 1968, although the congregation remained separately listed in Jewish Year Books until 1969. The actual date is provided in Encyclopaedia of British Jewish Cantors, Chazanim, Ministers etc., by Michael Jolles, 2024 edition, p.538.

  • (v) The United Synagogue 1870-1970 by Aubrey Newman (1977), page 222.

  • (vi) to (viii) Reserved.

  • (ix) There were no ministers listed for the congregation in Jewish Year Books.

  • (x) All data extracted from Jewish Year Books, which from 1957 ceased listing officers of a congregation, other than the secretary or hon. secretary. Where a person was listed as hon. secretary of this congregation, it has been assumed that his term of office commenced in the year of publication of the relevant year book (which was generally towards the end of the year prior to the year appearing in the title of the year book) and that he continued in office until the commencement of office of his successor (e.g. if he is listed in Jewish Year Books 1961 through 1963, it is assumed that he commenced office in 1960 and continued in office until 1963). Furthermore, as G. Shulman was listed as hon. secretary in the 1969 edition, it is assumed that his second term of office began in 1968 and ended with the merger of the congregation later the same year.  However, it should be noted that the foregoing is only an assumption and accordingly actual years of office may differ slightly from those shown here.

  • (xi) The United Synagogue 1870-1970 by Aubrey Newman (1977), page 220.

  • (xii) Prior to 1 April 1974, the Registration Districts were Ilford, Romford and Epping. All registers would now be held by the current register office.
