Congregation Data

Paignton Hebrew Congregation

10 Torquay Road, Paignton, Devon

Date Founded:

During World War II

Current Status:

Synagogue closed about 1948 - merged with Torquay Hebrew Congregation (which initially became the Torquay and Paignton Hebrew Congregation).

Ashkenazi Orthodox

Cemetery Information:

There was no Jewish cemetery in Paignton at the time when the congregation was functioning, and the congregants would have used the Jewish cemeteries in Plymouth and, possibly, Exeter.
However, in 1962, some years following the closure of the Paignton synagogue and the merger of the congregation with the Torquay congregation, the Torquay and Plymouth Hebrew Congregation acquired a cemetery in Paignton, being the Jewish Section of the Paignton Cemetery, which is still in use (for details, see Torbay Jewish Cemetery Information).
