The Bellem & Assenheim Family

I am researching my family tree of Assenheims and Bellems who I believe were resident in Plymouth for several generations, and I think that some Bellems also lived in Dartmouth. In fact, I have been told that Mattatias Bellem may have been a founder member of the Dartmouth synagogue. I travelled to Dartmouth last week to try to discover if there was, or had been, a synagogue there but no-one had ever heard of one. I wondered if you had any knowledge about whether Dartmouth has ever had a synagogue?

NOTE: There was an excellent website about the Assenheim family and its many members at www.assenheim.com (Webmaster Note: This link no longer exists as of 12 April 2010. For several years interesting and informative data on the Assenheim family could be found at http://www.mandy-janes.co.uk/ASSENHEIM/assenheims.htm but as of 31 August 2018, this link was also inpoerative 12 April 2010.)
