The town and borough of Luton, which lies about 35 miles to the north of central London, has a population of about 185,000. It was a county borough until 1974, when it became a local government district within the county of Bedfordshire. In 1997, it became a unitary authority.
The Jewish Community
The first Jews settled in Luton in about the 1880's, although the Luton community was not organised until 1923.
