Bedfordshire

JCR-UK is a genealogical and historical website covering all Jewish communities and
congregations throughout the British Isles and Gibraltar, both past and present.
NOTE: We are not the official website for these communities.

Town of Luton

The town and borough of Luton, which lies about 35 miles to the north of central London, has a population of about 185,000. It was a county borough until 1974, when it became a local government district within the county of Bedfordshire. In 1997, it became a unitary authority.

Town of Dunstable

The town of Dunstable is situated just to the west of Luton and has a population of about 34,000.  It was a municipal borough within the county of Bedfordshire until 1974, when it was merged with adjoining localities to form the local government district of South Bedfordshire, within the administrative county of Bedfordshire. In 2009, South Bedfordshire was merged with adjoining districts to form the unitary authority of Central Bedfordshire.

The Jewish Community

The first Jews settled in Luton in about the 1880's, although the Luton community was not organised until 1923. In modern times, the Dunstable Jewish Community dates from World War II, although a medieval Jewish community had existed in the town.
