offtopic 3898 970901 Offtopic resource list. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ - Off-topic - Suggested mailing lists, newsgroups etc. which can be used to discuss things that are off-topic on the JewishGen Conference. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+ A JewishGen InfoFile The purpose of the JewishGen Conference is described in the InfoFile "rules". If you are not familiar with it, you can request it by sending an e-mail message to the address rules@jewishgen.org Your message will be processed automatically; both the subject and the body are ignored and can be left blank if your mail program permits this. Other InfoFile can be requested in the same way; they are also available on our WWW pages, where they can be easily reached from the home page http://www.jewishgen.org Discussions on the JewishGen Conference must be confined to topics that are pertinent to Jewish genealogy. For numerous topics which are not appropriate here, there are suitable newsgroups, mailing lists, etc. (1) If you want to circulate a general announcement, questionnaire or the like among a large number of Jewish readers, please use the unmoderated newsgroup "soc.culture.jewish" rather than specialized groups such as the JewishGen Conference. (2) For issues of Jewish law, customs and culture, we suggest that you try the newsgroup "soc.culture.jewish" or one of the numerous specialized mailing lists. Most of these lists are available from the Shamash Project, from Project Genesis or from Jerusalem One; for further information, go to the WWW pages http://shamash.org http://www.torah.org/learning/index.html http://www.jer1.co.il/lists/indexabc.htm or gopher to gopher://shamash.org:70/11/lists gopher://gopher.jer1.co.il:70/11/lists and look for the list archives. FidoNet also carries a variety of echoes on Jewish topics. (3) For all matters concerning Yiddish language, literature and folklore, we recommend the moderated Internet mailing list mendele@yalevm.cis.yale.edu To subscribe, send an e-mail message with the line sub mendele to the address listserv@yalevm.ycc.yale.edu Back issues are available from the Web archives at http://sunsite.unc.edu/yiddish/mewais.html and also by ftp: ftp://ftp.mendele.trincoll.edu/pub/mendele/files (4) Questions about Hebrew can be posted to the Internet mailing list heblang@israel.nysernet.org which is identical with the newsgroup "israel.heblang". To subscribe, send an e-mail message with the line sub heblang to the address listserv@israel.nysernet.org (5) If you need help with genealogy software, please post to our sister newsgroup "soc.genealogy.computing". (6) Translation requests should be sent to the appropriate e-mail Hotline rather than to the JewishGen Conference. For further information, please request the InfoFile "trans" or look for the Volunteer Translation Service on our WWW pages. (7) Please note that the JewishGen Mentor Programme offers courses on various aspects of Jewish genealogy and related fields (with an opportunity for discussion) as well as Hotlines for specific types of questions. For further information, please visit our WWW pages or read the InfoFile "mentor". -------------- [01Sep97jm]bik Copyright 1996 by JewishGen Inc. +----------------------------------------------------------------------+
