Alexander Harkavy's 1928 Yiddish-English-Hebrew Dictionary contains some suggested "translative equivalents" for Jewish immigrants seeking new American given names. Most were calques, borrowings based upon the underlying meaning of a name, from Hebrew/Yiddish into Greek/Latin. Apparently, not many immigrants took to his suggestions, prefering instead to imitate the names of their American-born neighbors.
