The same holds true of documents from Russia or Poland. Civil clerks were not Jewish; they did not speak Yiddish, they were unfamiliar with Jewish names and they just wrote what they heard. So sometimes Gimpel might appear as Kimpel, or Feivel as Wajwel, or Wolf as Wolw, etc., etc.
