There are many books which you can refer to to discover a name's etymology, history and variants, which are listed in the bibliography.

Jewish Personal Names: Their Origin, Derivation and Diminutive Forms, by Rabbi Shmuel Gorr (Avotaynu, 1992), now back in print (1999), groups names by their root name, listing all related names together with their variants. Gorr died, however, before the book was finished; it was prepared for publication by his literary executor, Chaim Freedman. One drawback is that this book does not indicate when or where particular variants were used, and a few common names are missing.
