Description of Resources:

Founded in 1894 to gather genealogical records and assist members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with their family history and genealogical research. It is the largest library of its kind in the world.

The collection includes:

1. Over 2.5 million rolls  of microfilmed genealogical records,
742,000 microfiche, 300,000 books, serials, and other formats, and 4,500 periodicals.

2. The Ancestral File database contains approximately 35.6 million names that are linked into families.

3  The International Genealogical Index database contains approximately 600 million individual names. An addendum to the International Genealogical Index contains an additional 125 million names.

4 The Pedigree Resource File database contains 36 million names that are linked into families.

5.
Records available are from the United States, Canada, the British Isles, Europe, Latin America, Asia, and Africa.

Online

HeritageQuest Online was previously named Genealogy and Local History Online.  It is owned by ProQuest. Access is via authorized institutions such as libraries.

Description of Resources:

1. US Federal Census:

Images: 1790-1930
Indexes*: 1790,1800, 1810, 1820, 1860, 1870, 1890, 1910, 1920, 1930  

* Heads of household, persons who had different surname, boarders, individuals living in institutions. 1930 is only partially indexed. (as of 21 June 2004)

2. Books

ProQuest's Genealogy & Local History Collection of 25,000+ family and local history books, every word searchable. Every page of each book is presented and can be easily downloaded or copied. 


3. PERSI

The PERiodical Source Index is a comprehensive subject index covering more than 6,500 genealogy and local history periodicals. The user has the ability to search and browse these journals

Description of Resources:

Original SS-5 forms which individuals filled out when applying for Social Security. 

Access to Records and Fees:

Write to SSA under the Freedom of Information Act, 5 U.S.C. Section 552  requesting the SS-5 application.  Provide the Social Security Number, date of birth, and date of death which you can obtain from the Social Security Death Index (SSDI).  The fee is $27.  Be sure to provide your address and daytime phone number.  Forms also available via the internet.

Description of Resources:

An on-line resource of deaths reported to the Social Security Administration between 1962 and the present.  It contains birth date, death date, state of issuance, zip code of residence at time of death (not necessarily where individual died) for people working after 1936.

Access to Records and Fees:

A number of free sites still exist to access the information.  These sites have different searching capabilities.
