Dear Marc,

The H-SIG website is looking real snazzy.  thanks for all of your hard work and mazel tov, somewhat belatedly, on your new baby.

Sorry that you missed the NY conference.  As you may have heard from Louis, we spent quite a bit of time at the H-SIG meeting talking about projects and additions to the website.  there was a consensus that there is a considerable abount of info in the H-SIG archives that might be useful for researchers and easier to access if listed on the data page.

I'm sending you two items that were previously posted to the list but might be worth including on the data page. The first  is a list of names from the 1828 Census for Sziget, Maramaros, that I posted.  This is followed by a list of names from the 1828 Census for Karacsonfalva aka Tiszakaracsonfalva ( now Craciunesti, Rom.) that Dolph Klein provided.

Although this info might be easier to use in spreadsheet form, as Dolph suggests in his message, I think it will still be of interest to folks researching these places.

Do you mind if I send along items like this or will it just make your life more complicated??

Best wishes and l'shana tovah!

------------------------
The 1828 Land Census for Sziget, Maramarosmegye, lists 620 households including the following Jewish heads of household.  The names are in alphabetical order, not in the order they appear in this record.  Names are listed as they appear in the records, which usually gives surnames before given names.  In some cases the censustaker has obviously transposed the first and last names (e.g. Smil Veisz should be Veisz Smil).

Jozif Kahan, who is identified as "Rabbonim Judaeus" and Nachman Kahan were both sons of Rabbi Yehuda Kahan (1740-1819), the first rabbi of Sziget.

This information can be found on FHL International Film # 623056.

----------------------------------Subject: Census data from Karacsonfalva, 1828.
From: Dolph Klein <kledolph@acpub.duke.edu>

I have ordered a number of microfilm reels through my local FHC,
particularly on the 1928 Hungarian Land Census from the counties of Pozsony
and parts of Nyitra, Trencsen, and Maramaros.

The data from Karacsonfalva below were copied from FHL's International
film, catalogue 0623055, listing the communities of Maramaros County
(Megye) from Desze to Korosmezo.

Karacsonfalva, Hungary, later known as Tiszakaracsonyfalva, is now called
Craciunesti, Romania and located about 8 km NW from Sighet. Each census
taker seems to have his/her quirks. In this case, the surname of Jews were
written in the second position while those of non-Jews were written in the
first position. In accordance to the amount of space available for names,
the word for Jew would be written right after the name of the head of
household as Judaed, Judae, Juda, Jud and even the letter, J,  if space was
limited. No names of members of a household other than the head were
included in the 1828 Census.

Of the 145 households, I counted 61 to be headed by a Jew. There were two
entries that did not have the written designation of Jud, but were written
as if they were Jewish. I noted these two entries with parentheses. One of
them, Abraham Feig is a possible ancestor on my maternal side of the family.

As for the handwritten script, I have to apologize if I did not read the
fancy and oft times difficult letter structures correctly. Please contact
me privately if you wish me to correct the spellings. Eventually, I will
transfer these names to a database or spreadsheet for inclusion in H-SIG's
data webpage.

The number that precede each name corresponds with the sequence of names in
the census and serves as a reference for you to find the entry should you
wish to view the microfilm for yourself. Be advised that there are
additional information beyond the number and name given for each entry. For
details see Louis Schonfeld's article on the 1828 census schedules:

On this microfilm, Karacsonfalva is listed as community number 58. Keep in
mind that s in Hungarian is pronounced sh as in shul, while sz has a pure s
sound.
