My GGG Grandfather Rabbi Moshe Halevi Kestenberg Rabbi in Gniewoszow, born aprox in 1830. I believe he was a son of Reb Shlomo of Przytyk, however I could'nt find any records to confirm that. The names of his children are very simular to the names of the children of Reb Yechiel, as: Chana Sheindel (R' Shlomo of Przytyk's wife was Chana and his mother Sheindel, they both died bet 1848-1849, and Chana Sheindel was born in 1853. Sucher Dov, Menucha, Hillel, Yermya, Yitzchok Meir etc. Is there anyone who would be able to confirm that for me? Thanks alot PS-In the Sefer Ahavas Dovid on Kotzk that I have published in 2007, and a second edition in 2008, I have written a few generations up from Reb Shlomo of Przytyk.

Hello,I have the name Kozlowski in my family. Actually, my great grandfather, Stephen Kozlowski, changed the spelling of his and the family name to Steven Coloske. The family lived in Lincoln Park, Michigan since around 1935. There was an article written in the Detroit News around 1940 - 1945 that tells about my great grandfather's business, Lincoln Park Industries. Steven Coloske married Francis Theresa Melczek and they had six children. Their names are Harold, Gerald, Loraine, Donald, Ronald and Daniel. I was told that Steven Coloske's father was a school teacher in Prussia. I don't know his name. Are we talking about the same Kozlowski family? Thank you, Rosemary

I am trying to find my long lost relatives, with the surname Urbach. I was told that I am related to a professor Ephraim Urbach. Professor Ephraim Elimelech Urbach, former president of the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities (1912-1991) lived to the age of 79. Who came to Israel. He conducted his studies in Jerusalem. He was also a rabbi - and I am told that he was once nominated for president of Israel. My great grand uncle Alec Tondosky told me about the family when he came to the United Kingdom. His mother was Millie Urbach. Ephraim Urbach was his uncle. Ephraim's son I am told was a pilot in the 1st world war. Millie Urbach (1880-1941) his mother was once married at one time to a baker - Horowitz. Millie died at the age of 61. My great grand uncle has failing eyesight so I am trying to find out for him and his sister about the family. The Horowitz family had three children Lou Horowitz and two others unknown to us. Charles Tondosky (1871-1943) 2nd marriage was to Millie Urbach (Yehoshua yosef ben Avrohom Moshe) migrated to London England where other member of the Tondosky / Krowiarskis had already settled. Migrated approx 1880s. He came from the Kalisz region of South West Poland, of the former Czarist Russion Empire. Could have been Blaszki at the time. Alec and Marie were their children. Charles also had children from another marriage with Malka Krowiarski. I have a family tree website at www.familytreeofus.com that gives more detail of my family. The entry for Rabbi Benjamin Ozer in your lisiting of the ancestry of the Rotbajn family caught my eye for obvious reasons...I know little of my father's ancestry except that my paternal grandfather Carl (Kalman) came to the US from Russia (near Minsk is a possibility). If I understand your formatting, your listing for Rabbi Benjamin Ozer shows no sons, so I suppose this is a dead end for me...Thanks for a great site...

My grandfather was Noach Edelman (m. Reichel Eckstein) and lived in Biala Podlaska, Poland at the turn of the century till the Holocaust. They were all taken to the camps on Friday, Oct. 25, 1941 the 23rd Tishrei. Only one child remains alive today. William Edelman, NYC. Please contact me if you have any information.

I was amazed at the amount of information you have accumulated. You mentioned the name Halpern. My mother's maiden name was Halpern. Her family came from Bialystok and Lomza. Her father's name was Nochem Yitzchak and her grandfather was Avraham Moshe Halpern. I do not know too much about the family, as only my grandfather and grandmother came to America. The rest of the family, I believe remained in Europe. One thing I do know is that it was a very respected family. One of my uncles married the daughter of Rabbi Eliezer Shulevitz and a second uncle of mine married the sister of Rabbi Yechiel Mordechai Gordon. Both were founders of the Lomza Yeshiva.

On my husband's side, we found that from the records of St. Boniface Catholic Church in St. Louis, that the mother of his great-grandmother, a Constantia Kerkamp, was one Theresa Rothbein. Constantia was born in May 1850 supposedly in the Black Forest region of Germany. We are grateful to your website for some background to the name.

I am trying to trace the origins of a Theresa Rothbein. I just found her on the Nov 24, 1870 marriage record on St. Boniface Catholic Church records of St. Louis, Missouri. She appears as the mother of the bride, Constantia Herkamp, father is Anthony Herkamp, groom is Christian Flier, father of the groom Henry Flier, mother of the groom Ursula Krasch. The bride and groom were believed to have been born in Baden, Germany. We have long thought some aspect of the family had Jewish origins, however, because when my son married a Jewish girl and they had reason to have genetic testing, she tested clear for Tay-Sachs, but his test was questionable. Thank you for your website; it gives me insight into the origin of the name.

My mother's maiden name is Grinbaum (could have been Grünbaum before, or any other way to spell it). Her father, Lazaro (Lazar, or Lazarus, or however he was in polish) was from Piotrkow. For reasons known to all of us, he never wanted to talk about family matters, so many deaths and persecutions, you know, but then I found I don't know anything about that branch of our family. So far I haven't been able to locate any relative from my grandfather anywhere. Can you give me a hint on how to do my search?

I want to add some additional information to the query I submitted just a few minutes ago in case someone who visits your site may have had some connection to Bialystok. My Mom was from Bialystok. Her name was Rachel (Ruth)Nevadowskaya, daughter of BENYAMIN NEVADOWSKY. She was one of seven children. Two of her sisters, together with their husbands and children, perished during the Holocaust (Treblinka, Bialystoker Ghetto, massacre deep in the forest outside Bialystok) - Their married names were Topitzer and Offenbach. Two of her sisters and her two brothers settled in New York before the War. In Bialystok in 1995 my children and I met a man who actually knew one of my cousins who perished in the massacre. If anyone has a connection to Bialystok and some information about the NEVADOWSKY family, I would very much like to hear from you.

Remarkably full family tree - wonderful! My Mom was from Bialystok. My children and I went to Bialystok several years ago - very difficult journey. Spent a very intensively and emotionally draining year doing a lot of research on family and Bialystok and went back the following year to attempt to get family informtation from government records - did get birth documents for some family members but would have liked to trace more family members. Have not at this time continued on this project but will at some point return to it. So nice to see a family with such detailed family history.

Should I assume that the Aaaron Walden mentioned is none other than Rabbi Aron wALDEN the renowned author of Shem Hagedolim Hechadash? My great-aunt told my mother that she would one day share a secret about her mother with mom. She died without sharing that secret. She was still afraid to share it after all those years. My grandfather went back and found 2 of my great-aunts and his father after the war in Hanover, Germany. I have wondered if there was Jewish ancestry in our family tree.

Unfortunately, I do not know the names of my grandfather's sisters or brothers, but with all the Klinger names, and their locale around Lodz and Radom, I can't help feeling there must be some connection. You've inspired me to do some Jewish genealogy for our part of the family. Incidentally, the name "Gardenberg" is mentioned as a possible connection. By coincidence, my sister's married name is "Gartenberg". As far as I know, they were from Czernovitz. But again, more research is in order. Let's keep in touch.
