I've been trying to get info on my father/grandfather's side of the family. My grandfather didn't talk much about his dad - he mentioned having to go to work to support the family around the fourth grade. I am aware of one sister and four brothers but I know there were aprox 14 children...some died as babies = one was murdered maybe in New York (I think). Four brothers lived in los angeles while I was growing up and one sister lived in new york, and died there while i was young (30 years ago +/- 2 or 3 years--- I'd love to find out more about what you know

I notice that my entries quote my previous e-mail address and home address. In case anyone has been trying to contact me, I am entering my new address.I am searching for any Descendants of my Berliner Ancestors. Fela and Frania Berliner, Daughters of Jacob and Brandla were known to have survived the Lodz Ghetto and were sent to recover in Paris. I have not been able to find any information about them from there. It's very unlikely that these two Women would be alive to-day but they might have Descendants who are. Wonderful website.Firstly, please don't send any money to anyone asking for it. It is always a scam. (referring to the two requests for releasing funds from foreign banks and they will give you a high percentage) Secondly, a wonderful resource I found was through the Mormon church family history centers (wherever their temples are located, ie. Mesa AZ, Idaho). You can also contact the mormon history centers in Utah,(Salt Lake City) however, they charge fees for their use. So I would strongly suggest that several people go in on paying the fee and then share the info. They tracked all info from North America, South America, Australia, Indonesia, all of Europe, including all lists from the concentration camps (Jews and non-Jews)and alot of info from Russia(including other provinces) and many parts of Asia. If you visit one of the Family History centers, be careful, they are very helpful, but always interested in new converts. You can get their info online, once again at a charge, so please share. their info includes birth and death records, marriage, divorce, religious/baptism, ships manifests and cargo, and the lists from the death camps. Be aware, these are not easy to go through, they weigh heavy on your heart, but give insight and knowledge and are therefore worth it to those with the strength to go through it. These should be copied over to the Shoah Foundation. I hope that those who survived the holocaust will send their stories to this wonderful foundation sponsored by Steven Spielberg. As far as he knew Felek who was at university in Paris was the only survivor. The rest of the family are believed to have perished in auschwitz. During his lifetime Felek could not bear any mention of the past but now he is gone I would like to find some answers for my daughter. How do I go about this?

My father-in-law, JACOB NEUFELD (born Jakub Najfeld) left Lodz for the U.S. in 1929 to study in graduate school against his father's wishes. His parents, ISAAC, a textile executive and TAUBA MARJA, and his sister RACHEL (LOLA) were subsequently rounded up into the Lodz Ghetto and later sent to Auschwitz, where they died. One sister, ROMA, who had married ARTHUR LUBINSKI and moved to France, survived. Arthur was a member of the French Resistance, and they later moved to the United States. Jake, who is now deceased, would never discuss what he knew about how his family lived and died. What little we know we learned from Roma, and she is also now dead. I'm searching for anyone who might have known the NEUFELDS/NAJFELDS in Lodz or known about them and could tell us more.

Very interesting that you were able to go so far back. My father (who was born in Lodz in 1901) always said the family name was pronounced 'bornstein' or 'boinstin' before coming to the US. I came to your site because of the name Bornsztajn which might be the name he was referring to.

We are researching on my husbands roots...all we have is very vague memories of his grandfather John Neufeld, now deceaased...A very sad story, he was born a Mennonite in the Ukraine and his family was killed by Stalin just before the revolution, only he and a young sister escaped. A family took them in and emigrated with them to Canada, his sister was put on another boat to South America and he never heard of her again. He ended up in Plum Coulee. Manitoba. He mentioned his grandmother was Jewish. We would love to trace this down but have so very little to go on. Any help out there???? He married Margaret ...and they had 8 children in Plum Coulee, the eldest Margaret is my husbands mother.

Please could you perhaps help even though I am of the generation after the war. My father Meyir had a brother Harry - Hanoch.They arrived in South Africa in 1935. I have only been researching my family history since July. I have discovered that my Great Great Grandfather, Jacob Etgart (although perhaps originally spelt differently in Polish) was born in Lubien in May 1848.His wife, Hannah (Anna) Moritz, was born in Chodiz (probably Chodecz) also in 1848.They emigrated to London in the 1860s.I wonder how I might go about locating their Polish records.I also have the names of Jacob's parents, David and Leah Etgart, and of his brothers, Morris and Meyer Etgart.I know of one brother for Hannah, Woolf Moritz.Any assistance would be appreciated. I am also encountering immense difficulties in establishing the derivation of the surname "Etgart" Others have suggested that in Polish it would be Edgard or Edgar. My mother, PESA ERDBERG, came from Lodz. She lived with her family at LIMANOWSKIEGO 6 (in Polish, Litzmannstadt in the Ghetto, Alexanderhofstrasse during occupation). Sadly, she was forced to leave with her family when she was 23 years old. I grew up listening to her sad and amazing stories of the ghetto, Bergen Belsen, Auschwitz and other slave labor camps. She was the only one to survive, losing her mother and father, her three sisters and numerous other relatives. She later married my father, Zelman ZUBACK of Vilnius, and gave birth to my brother, Jakob, and I. She is now 84 years old and her health is fading. Fortunately, with the help of a friend of mine, we have found a nice fellow who lives in Lodz who has confirmed that the house she grew up in on Limanowskiego is still standing. He was kind enough to take a photograph of it for me and send it via email. I printed it out and showed it to her last week. We had heard so much about the house as children, the shop below where they worked and the day the Nazis forced them to gather in the courtyard before leaving the house never to see it again. So when we recently made contact with our friend in Lodz, who was kind enough to take a photograph of the house and send it to us, we were amazed and delighted. We visited the nursing home where my mother stays and were enthralled to listen to her when she saw the photo of the house – for the first time in almost sixty years.My brother and I are hoping to make a trip there within the next few months.If anybody has anything to add or can be of any assistance, please feel free to contact me at the email address below (via my buddy Jeff). My mother was in fiv e different concentration camps and was liberated from Dachau along with my father Morris Talerman who was the son of Sura Miriam Epstein and Toyvye Talerman. Fela and Morris were both in the Lodz Ghetto, however, my mother left the Lodz Ghetto and went to the Warsaw Ghetto. She was on the last transport out of Warsaw. I have traced my family tree back to Judah & Leah Yarrochovsky who were born in Lodz. Nearly all of their 10 children were born in Ozorkow approx. between 1880 to 1900. I am trying to trace my grandathers family from Piotrkow. My great granfather was Moses Jacob Zynger my grandmother Annie. They had eight children altogether. My granfather came over here as a young man.After the war, my grandfather Daivid Singer,which he was known as in England, tried to trace his family after the war. it was led to believe that his family were able to esacpe to Rakow forest. My parents both came from Lodz, Poland, My father (Louis Korman, a carpet weaver by trade)imigrated to USA about the turn of the century (1900). He returned to Lodz in around 1927-28 and married my mother (Fanny Korman) and they both moved to Toronto for perhaps 3 years, then again we all moved to Seattle in 1946. I believe all my family in Lodz were killed by the Nazis except for an uncle Joseph (Jose) Korman (deceased) (mothers side of family) who had moved to Montivideo, Uruguay and then to La Plata, Argentina. I would sure like to hear from any possible relatives--but I have doubts that there are any. In England his name was translated as "bright-wood" and then shortened to WOOD. On 22.6.1879 he married MARIA GREENBAUM, also of Lodz, father's name Isaac, a tailor, in Kingston-on-Hull. Whilst browsing I came across the the surname Kaminsky. My great grandmothe was Annie Kaminsky (Chaia Bat Meir) and her brother was Baruch. Her father was Meir Kaminsky and her mothers name was Miriam. They came from Neistadt in Poland and settled in the UK about 1860. Annie was born in 1852. Names in common: WARSZAWSKIJ (variation of Wenz and WIAZOWSKI, Kopel (my great grand dad was Kopela Wenzousky - but translated by a Russian in the exact odd spelling surnames you have listed - about 4 variations! My paternal grandfather, Simon Wolf Kyjawski was born in Lodz in 1878. He left Poland when he was 15 or 17, later settling in Birmingham, England, where he and his wife Annie (maiden name Isaacs) raised a large family. I've been trying to locate my grandfather's vital records. In addition, I have tried to find out if any of the family from Poland survived the Holocaust. A cousin, Willie Kyjawski & his wife Regina visited the UK briefly in 1939 or '40. They were en route either for the U.S. or Canada. Unfortunately the family lost touch after a year or so.

I ran out of time before I could look at the marriage record of Aron R. to Ryfka Bergier. My grandfather's name was Louis Berger. Sometime in the early 1920's the family changed its name to Bergere. We have very little information about my grandfather's family. He married Ann Feeney in in the late 1800's or early 1900's and lived in NYC. They had five children Kenneth, Vivian, Isabelle, Josephine and Warren. Warren is my father. All are living except for Kenneth who passed away in the early 1960's. It is thought that after Louis married Ann ,an Irish Catholic, he distanced himself from his family. It is also thought that Louis's parents emigrated from Poland. Other details: Louis is buried in a large Jewish cemetary in NYC( maybe Brooklyn or Queens). My brother Allen and sister Rori are very interested in our family history. If you think we may be descendants of the Berger Family of Lodz,Poland I can see if more detail can be provided to you such as dates, locations, as well as other relationships. My father was born in Lodz in 1898 and emigrated to Buenos Aires in 1930 for the PKO. The surname might have been spelt Gelbsztain. Most of his family died in the Holocaust except for one brother who I believe escaped from Majdanek after the war stayed in Lodz under the new name of Stanislaw Krysztoporski. The french widow of one of the brothers Aaron (Mme Francette Gelbstein) died in Haifa in the 1980s. Would certainly like to know more about any of these relatives.

My maternal BERGER line starts out in Pietkowo. Sora BERGER married Mendel Josel BERGER and had many children. Max left Lomza Gubernia in 1884 for NYC and was followed by Sarah in 1888. She came with the first four kids. I have ship docs for all of this data and more. Sarah had a sister Rifka (Rebecca) who married a man named Solomon PHILLIPS in Poland and had one child before thay came to NYC in abt 1885. I was really hoping that I might have found some type of information regarding my family geneology in this webpage. Unfortunately I did not, as I believe my last name was originated in Germany where my grandfather was born. Albert Asher (Usha) Berger. My family had to leave due to persecution and not many survived. My grandfather (deceased) has a sister and she is the only other survivor of his family other then their offspring. My end of Berger Family has been traced only back to 1865 in Sudilkov in the Ukraine. Located about 123 miles SE of Kiev , near Shepatovka. I have been unable to go back beyond that point out of being tied up in other matters. My papers for refernce are not availbale at this time. I will however go back into them and provide you with what I have put together. It is not impossible (nothing every is) that we do have a common thread.

My name is Charles Silow, my mother's maiden name was Sara Parzenczewska from Lodz. She had two sisters, Malka and Bluma (I believe) who were killed in the Holocaust. Her father's name was Yechiel Parzenczewska, her mother's name was Raizel Viazovski Parzenczewska. I'll ask my mother for more information. Perhaps your "Wisczowski" is our Viasovsky (my phonetic pronounciation). Let's talk further..

My father's name was Gershon Kohn, born 1916 in Plock Poland. His father was Hersh Josef, born about 1880 in Poland. Hersh Josef had at least 2 brothers, one of which was named Fischel. My father is no longer alive and other than himself and two cousins, Adam and Moishe, we know of no other survivors of his family. I was intrigued by the reference to Kohn surname is your Webpage. I hope one day to be able to gather enough information about my family that I can pass it on to my children. Thank you for posting your listing, I appreciated being able to read it.

Did you look at my Berger tree? It's in the shtetlink part of jewishgen, under Zmigrod. Although I can see no connection, I did see some of the same names --- my GF was Wolf, he had a brother Jonah, a cousin Haskel, his mother was Brandel, his wife Zlate. They must have been common names. Brandel was a Morgenstern, and Zlate a Spiro. We'll just have to keep plugging away. You've been able to get further back than I. Simon Grunbaum son of Abraham and Hannah left Lodz for Sweden and married Chaya Levin there. Two children Jacob and Sara were born in Landskroner then they left for the USA in August 1916 and settled in Joliet, Illinois. Their descendants lived in Cleveland and Akron and now are all over the country. Also know of a Wishogrodsky family from Lodz whose descendants live in Israel. know of a Wishogrodsy family from Lodz now living in Israel.

Good job, congratulations. I have some interest in Lodz as several branches of my family originate from there as well. One remark concerning Layzer and Hanny Wdowa Matzonkij: The word "wdowa" or "widowa" is not a name, it means "widow" in Polish. And the word "Matzonkij" is probably the often encountered term "malzonki" which follows the surname of a wife and simply means "wife", thus it is not a surname either. Best regards, Daniel

Do you know of Priscilla Berger, born in 1876 and died in Winnipeg in 1951. She was the wife of Samuel Rosner, and the mother of my aunt Freda and her three sisters one of whom was Sadye, married to Samuel Bronfman, who owned Seagrams. I don't know where the Rosners came from, but they lived in Plum Coulee, Manitoba, around the turn of the century.
