My name is Esther Malabel, daughter of the late Nissim Malabel and Rebecca Behar Malabel Langer. According to a 1954 Social Security Application in his own handwriting, My father was born Apr. 30, 1893, son of Esther Benveniste and Moshe Malabel, in Istanbul, Turkey. The name "Malabel" was invented, due to the "too Jewish" sound of the original,which was thought to limit life's opportunities. I am trying to determine my father's (or my paternal grandfather's) orignal, "real" surname, other than Malabel, the invented name. My mother, now deceased, knew it, but had difficulty remembering it, saying it was something like, Mahalalel, Mehalel, Mahalel, or Malachael ( Malach Ha El?). I wondered if anyone out there might how to find marriage records of my paternal grandparents,or something else, in order to see if my grandfather's name was,at the time of his marriage, any different than Malabel (maybe he altered his name after 1893,when his children were born,or maybe my father,not my grandfather,was the one who made the change.) My mother, Rebecca, born 1913 in Silivria, moved with her large Behar family from Silivria to Cuba, but I am not certain of the year. My name is Moises Behar and both of my parents' families (Behar and Franco)came from Silivri. I was born in Puerto Rico and my parents were born in Cuba (Camajuani). I had the great pleasure and honor of visiting Silivri three years ago. I was arranged a tour by the Mayor of the village of the area that used to be the Jewish quarter on the top part of the city. There I finally saw the fountain that my grandfather Samuel Franco told me that his grandfather built for the community. I was also pointed out to the Behar's humble house. I was also taken to a byzantine cystern were the tombstones of Jews, Greeks, and Turks are kept. I took photos of the Jewish tombstones, but I have not been able to translate them. The remains of our ancestors were taken by the Turkish and Israeli government in the 1960's to a cemetery in Acre, Israel. The tour was conducted by an elderly doctor who said that he lived near the Jewish quarter when all the Jews left for Cuba in the 20's. He remembered when my family and when Jews lived in Silivri. I would like to know if anyone has been to Silivri and would like to share their experiences with the rest of the family. Moises Behar

My grandparents were from Silivri. I had the pleasure of see with my own eyes what wonderful grand mother Virgina Behar described to me as a child. I still have relatives there though my great Uncle Daniel Susar passed away a few years ago. He made yogart there until the 70's. My grand father was name David Franco and they left Silivri in 1922. So he would not have to fight in the Dardenelles. They went to Cuba then Spain and back to Cuba. My father came to the USA in the late 50's. He brought his whole family from Cuba in the early 60's. Most of my family now live in Miami though I have family in Spain, Mexico, El Salvdor, France, Turkey, Israel and many more.

I have a relative Simon Leon Salsberg from Mexico who is married to Maty Maya also from Mexico. Simon Leon Salsberg's grandmother was Esther Tachna who was born in Mlawa, Poland in 1900 and died in Mexico in 1977. They live in Mexico and have a daughter Diane and a son David who were both born in Mexico. Do you have any family relation to Maty (Maya) Salsberg?
