Basic 4: Explore the new Belarus SIG Web Site
The Belarus SIG was established in 1998 to promote Jewish genealogical research in Grodno, Minsk, Mogilev and Vitebsk Gubernias as well as the Lida and Vileika uyzeds (districts) of Vilna Gubernia.
The website offers access to primary and secondary records to help you find your ancestors, search for records, and to learn more about your town.
This course includes:
- The Geography of Belarus and where to find your Shtetl
- How to search for your ancestors on the JewishGen and Belarus Websites
- How the Belarus SIG is organized to help you find records for your ancestors
- What are the records available for your Town and District
- How to join a Belarus Research Project
- A timeline and Description of the Geographical Administrative Divisions of Belarus
- A history of Jewish Belarus
- How to use secondary sources when records are not available
There is no requirement to receive this series of lessons; everyone is eligible. The price is $25.00. The fee will be waived if you qualify for JewishGen's Value Added Services, having made a $100 donation to JewishGen’s General Fund within the past 12 months. You are then welcome to enroll at no additional charge (the system will recognize you and will not ask for a credit card; if it doesn't, please email the instructor).
