Did you have ancestors from Galicia? Would you like to understand the resources for researching them both online and onsite ?
This two part course is designed for those who are relatively new to Galician research, have a Galician ancestor, have done their U.S. research and know one town name. Please note: This course will not cover U.S. or U.K. research; for U.S. research, see the New York or Complex U.S. Genealogy Course.
We will focus on developing a methodology for foreign records research, including: (1) the Family Document containing summaries of all the necessary information about your family branch, (2) the Research Table of where you've searched, (3) Your Tasks/ToDo list, and (4) A list of others researching your surname or shtetl.
This course has two parts: Galicia I will cover researching town information and vital records on 5 key websites:
Galicia II (2020), a Home Study Course, will cover the historical background of Galicia, naming conventions, how to use the Polish Archives-what is online and what is not, miscellaneous websites and records (census, military, directories etc), Holocaust research, languages, hiring a researcher and more! This course will be a research textbook, limited to graduates of Galicia I.
Format: This is a personal mentoring program which features an online FORUM where you'll be encouraged to post one ancestral branch (one surname), set goals for your research, and work one-on-one with the instructor to research your branch; here you can ask your questions. This personal mentoring process is unique to JewishGen education. Our classes have no scheduled times as our students are international, enabling everyone to read/view/post at leisure.
Please select one branch, one surname and one town for which you have the immigrant's
1. Name (preferably the Jewish name)
2. Approximate year of birth, and
3. Town of birth or residence.
To best utilize this course, we strongly suggest you have 8-10 hours per week to read the lessons, research online and interact with the FORUM. Our experience has been that those students who are able to spend the time, reap the rewards.
Tuition for Galicia I is $150. . We will schedule another section of this course in 2020.
